Vital Signs Review

December 24, 2007

“As for Shelia Callaghan’s wonderfully written “Ayravana Flies or A Pretty Dish,” the need for exotic excitement comes across a bit cryptically, but is completely carried by the characters: a shy (and English) Elephant (Fletcher McTaggart) and an excitable young cook, Olivia (Lauren Walsh Singerman). In a series of alternating monologues, Callaghan convinces us of how important it is that we really live and explore our world — not just by vicariously throwing in foreign spices like cumin, or by working in an airport to be around those bold enough to fly, but by daring to take risks oneself, even when it may lead to disaster. McTaggart plays the elephant with the potential to soar, but it’s Singerman who literally zooms across the stage, helping to make even the ambiguous portions of the script crackle with Callaghan’s unique wit.”  More.

Why can’t TYA be more like hockey?

December 15, 2007

Hockey is better than theater.  More specifically, seeing hockey is more exciting than seeing theatre.  Even more specifically, experiencing a New York Rangers game (this season) is more exciting is far better than sitting through any theater for young audiences production you can name.

Are you ready to drop the gloves?  Are you ready to “do the dance”?  Are you ready to risk 5 minutes for fighting?  I hope that you are.  But before you do, you should know: I love theater.  But I also love hockey.  And it’s not the fighting that I love (although I can admit that I stand when it happens), but it’s the speed, the skill, the competition and the enthusiasm emanating from the crowd that I feel even when I am 10 blocks away from Madison Square Garden on the way to a Rangers game.  And I want to feel the same way when I am on my way to a TYA production.

For more of this rant, look for the next issue of TYA Today. (And if you have an opinion, tell me…and help me write the article.)

The Claim: Don’t Eat the Mistletoe. It Can Be Deadly
By ANAHAD O’CONNOR
Mistletoe has a legendary reputation for romance, but it is also widely considered as lethal as it is festive.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Dodgers reached a tentative agreement late Wednesday night with free-agent center fielder Andruw Jones, a source with knowledge of the situation said on the condition of anonymity. Jones, a 10-time Gold Glove winner who was once one of the game’s most feared hitters, will receive a two-year, $36 million contract if he passes a physical and agrees to change the spelling of his first name so that the staff doesn’t have to keep clicking on the “Ignore Once” button every time they type his name into a document or have to explain to someone, “No, I didn’t accidentally write it wrong, that’s the way that he spells it and no, I don’t know why.”
